Chapter 19

T he boss had been calling him on his mobile all the morning, but Slumkie was unavailable. The irritation inside him was slowly turning choleric. He dialed again limping past the thirty odd body builders working out at the gym on the first floor. The stink of sweat and old carpet always filled the boss with a sense of achievement. It reminded him of the days of his workout… before his limbs were paralyzed…

He limped down the stairs and entered his cabin. For the past few days, he enjoyed looking at the stoned nude girls in the glass booths. The girls were sent away that morning and he suddenly felt bored… Lighting a cigar and blowing thick smoke from his nostrils, he focused on the breaking news of the day. If his mind was in turmoil, his exterior did not reveal it.

The news channel showed bytes of people of Detroit. Citizens were expressing fear at the prospect of continuing to live in this crime-ridden city.

“If I’d say that finding the body of Neuman Smith under the open sky, right in the middle of Calimera Park was unsettling, it’d be an understatement. Mrs. Turner who was on the way to her morning workout, found the body early this morning. Mrs. Turner was reported to have fainted for a few minutes, before she came back to her senses and called the cops. As in the other murders, the man was killed with a spear running up his skull. This was the eighteenth serial killing in Detroit and now the killer seems to have taken to the roads…” said the news anchor in a grave expression.

The boss’s long time employee Becker brought in breakfast. Becker knew when the boss was pissed off just by the vibe in the cabin and he knew better than to inform the boss that Slumkie had gone to the crime scene and would report an hour late. That was none of his business, Becker thought. The boss’s reaction could be unpredictable when he was pissed off.

Meanwhile the news program on the channel changed and another anchor on the television was talking about the chopper crash at the African American neighborhood in Detroit’s suburbs. They were careful not to mention too many details about the incident or give it even a bit more of airtime than what was required. It was apparent that the cops had given clear instructions to the media.

Watching the video clips of the debris of a chopper scattered all over a park, the boss’s blood pressure shot up. He swallowed a pill and called Slumkie again.

Slumkie’s mobile started ringing. The boss could hear the ring of Slumkie’s mobile from the other room when Slumkie entered the cabin in his usual swinging gait and sat down silencing his mobile. The boss bent forward and looked at Slumkie as if he was the reason for the sins of the entire mankind.

“Will you care to tell me…” he said looking at Slumkie menacingly, “what the fuck’s happening
